San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance
Stewardship and Sustainability Strategy
April 2023 – Present
The nonprofit San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance made its debut in 2021 as the newly branded umbrella organization for the world-famous San Diego Zoo and San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and their conservation teams’ international efforts to save wildlife and habitats in collaboration with partners across the globe. The organization’s deep commitment to conservation spans more than 100 years. San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance continues to build on this legacy and a commitment to its mission—saving species worldwide by uniting its expertise in animal care and conservation science with dedication to inspiring passion for nature—through innovative and collaborative approaches to address historical and current pressures on biodiversity loss. Those pressures include climate change, invasive species, habitat degradation, challenges to human-wildlife coexistence, wildlife trafficking, and emerging diseases.
The Alliance has decades of leading sustainability and stewardship practices in place. However, the organization’s leadership recognized the need and benefit of developing a more holistic strategy to guide and amplify their commitments, enrich their partnerships, and improve resource utilization and efficiency. Central to this work is a dynamic internal and external stakeholder engagement framework, built around education and engagement campaigns, and messaging. Confluence Sustainability is working across the Alliance portfolio to guide the development of multi-year stewardship and sustainability strategy, and an implementation road map.
